Mongolian herders suffer in downturn

Friday, June 19, 2009

HOHHOT, China — Western demand for cashmere has plunged and the painful effects of it are being felt throughout Inner Mongolia, where goat herders and manufacturers are suffering.

This New York Times story and slideshow illustrates how ripples from markets in the United States, Europe and Japan can reverberate to the most remote places in the world.

“The end to goat herding after centuries is the most sorrowful thing I have ever had to face,” said Yrthashun a herder who like many ethnic Mongolians uses only one name.
