Adding goats to the mix
Jim Falls, Wisconsin: Charlie Sue Ewings and her husband, Stanley, wanted to expand their dairy cow herd and decided to add goats to the mix.
“I’d been researching them for a while, and they seemed simpler and cleaner and like less work. They’re not. They’re just as much work as cows,” Charlie Sue told The Leader Telegram in this story.
The couple kept their dairy cows and bought 185 milking crossbred goats in January. Stanley milks the cows while Charlie Sue cares for the goats. They sell their milk to Kolb-Lena Cheese in Lena, Ill.
“If we got paid minimum wage for the amount of hours we put in here, we’d be rich,” Stanley said. “I guess it doesn’t matter if you have cows or goats, you put in a lot of time.”
