Dead Goat Polo Arcade Game
In an attempt to carry on for the defunct Weekly World News, we bring you this piece about a 1983 arcade game player from Kyrgyzstan that plays a Ulak-Tartysh video game.
Ulak-Tartysh, for those of you not familiar with carcass-based sports, essentially is Central Asian polo played horseback with the headless body of a dead goat, said uber-geek Jason Torchinsky, who bought and restored the arcade player after finding it sitting, forgotten, in a warehouse in Poland.
Ulak Tartysh, called Buzkashi in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey, is competitively fierce and a single game can last for days.
For the game, a goat or calf is beheaded, disemboweled and has its limbs cut off at the knees. The carcass is soaked in cold water for 24 hours before play, with sand sometimes added to the gut for extra weight.
Though a goat is used when no calf is available, players say a calf is less likely to disintegrate during play.
