Editorial: NAIS a homesteader’s nightmare
Everyone from one-goat homes to multi-herd farms need to stay abreast of the U.S. National Animal Identification System, NAIS.
Initially intended to curb the spread of animal disease among herds and in food production, NAIS — in our opinion — is a nightmare for small homesteaders and threatens to put small operations out of business.
While we understand the need to monitor the spread of disease, NAIS puts most of its financial burden on small operations, letting large commercial operations off the hook when it comes to bearing the brunt of funding a national identification system.
Educate yourself to both sides of this issue through these sites: the U.S. Department of Agriculture, NoNais.org, The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, and Fur Commission USA.
Maybe you’ll one be the one to figure a sane way to monitor disease and I.D. farm animals without running the little guy into the ground.
Thanks for listening,
Naimhe Jeanne and Martha Ann
