Goat Popularity Seen in 4-H Projects

Friday, July 31, 2009

LEBANON, Ohio — If the young farmers of Warren County, Ohio, are a barometer then a market for meat goats will continue to expand.

In the last eight years, the number of goats used for 4-H projects in Warren County has tripled from 29 meat goat projects in 2001 to 95 meat goat projects in 2009.

The increase in goat projects reflects an increase in demand for goat meat in Ohio urban areas populated by Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Caribbean and Indian communities.

“It’s a product that is consumed by almost every country outside of the U.S. and as they move to the U.S., that’s what they want to eat,” said Kent Davidson, president of the Ohio Boer Goat Association.
