Goat Speak

In this column for Utah’s Main Street Journal, Sarah Atkins treats us to Goat Sociology 101:

“Goats are very social creatures. If there is a gate you want them to go through, they wait patiently for you to go first. If there is a gate you don’t want them to go through they forge ahead.

“They are also very vocal…. The two little boy goats had rings clamped on their boy parts to castrate them The one our daughter Mary calls Worf, has had a voice change. Now he sounds like a human child desperately in need of help. I do hope a passer-by doesn’t call 911. I already live in horror of the militia arriving if the group ever gets loose in the neighborhood.”

We also learn that since Atkins started her “hobby,” four goats have turned into nine and she’s already spent nearly $10,000 on fencing and shed construction. A must read for anyone considering living with goats.
