The many breeds of Capra aegagrus hircus

Friday, July 24, 2009

Oklahoma State University and its affiliate Langston University offer detailed portraits on individual breeds and research being done in myriad subjects.

If you’re new to goats, this page is one-stop shopping with information on about 100 breeds. (If you’re an old hand with goats, you still might learn something you didn’t know.)

The Garza Institute for Goat Research at Langston include a 150-goat dairy, a creamery and the only Dairy Herd Improvement laboratory that calibrates instruments with goat milk standards.

Langston’s primary research thrust is dairy goat nutrition, with other projects including Angora, meat and cashmere goats. The nutrition studies focus on determining the nutrient requirements of goats with special emphasis on the high-producing dairy goat. In the field of pasture research, Langston is investigating the use of cool-season perennial grasses and low-input forage systems for goats.
