Gerald and Eddie

Sunday, August 9, 2009

Eddie, a goat, was supposed to be a temporary companion for Gerald, a giraffe, while zoo keepers in Bristol, England, searched for Gerald’s future mate.

That was three years ago. Today Gerald still lacks a giraffe as a mate, but he’s got Eddie and they are thick as thieves, The Daily Mail reported in this story.

“Gerald often bends down and licks Eddie on the head. Eddie then climbs onto Gerald’s neck and gives him a cuddle,” zoo keeper Sammi Luxa said. “They’re always together. They’re best mates.”

Eddie and Gerald chase each other around their enclosure and Gerald lets Eddie take the first bite from the trough when meals arrive, Luxa said, adding she’s still looking for a female giraffe for Gerald.

“I think Eddie will be OK if Gerald gets a mate moved into the enclosure,” Luxa said. “He isn’t really the jealous type, but you never know.”
