Goat deaths blamed on wind turbines

Thursday, August 13, 2009

A Taiwanese farmer says more 400 of his goats may have died from exhaustion because of noise from eight giant wind turbines near his grazing land.

“One night I went out to the (goat house) and the goats were all standing up; they weren’t sleeping,” Kuo Jing-shan told The BBC in this story.

The goats began to drop weight and act listless shortly after the turbines were installed four years ago in the Penghu area, legendary for its winds. The stronger the winds, the louder the turbines, Jing-shan said.

TaiPower, the utility company that owns the turbines, disputes the goats died from lack of sleep but has offered to pay part of the costs of moving the goats.

“It’s a pain to relocate,” Jing-shan said. “But what can I do. I can’t survive with the wind turbines.”
