Herding goats in Israel

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Celia Friede and her family are looking for volunteer goat herders for their small farm near the Egyptian border in the village of Ezuz.

This desert retreat in the Negev is a farming community of 16 families, some running bed and breakfasts, some working as desert guides for tourists and others, such as Celia, tending garden and goats.

Volunteers who’ve spent time in Ezuz say the work is not terribly taxing. The goats are milked at first light — with a machine — and then taken to graze as the sun comes up. From then on you’re free to explore until the evening milking session around 5 p.m. Volunteers help with the evening chores and aid Celia in making goat cheese.

Volunteer herders stay in a two-bedroom trailer, which includes food, bedding, a washing machine, and many books. You cook your own meals.
