Missing the Goats…

Friday, August 28, 2009

Jen, aka Tree Mama, wrote earlier this month about longing for goats to return to her life and her childhood memories of them on her great-grandparents’ farm, where she lives today, albeit goatless:

“I love their fur. I love their knobby knees…. I love their orneriness,” Jen told readers at Under the Big Blue Sky.

Jen went searching for, and found, a photo her grandfather had taken of her and the goats and then processed in his home dark room on their farm. Today the sweet little girl captured in this photo is a 37-year-old single mother of two “little hurricane” girls of her own, and a life complicated enough that goats remain a dream, for now.

Eds. Note: It says much about Jen that she quotes French philosopher Albert Camus: “In the depths of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.”
