Rocky Mountain Goat Restoration

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

UMATILLA, Ore. — Eighteen Rocky Mountain goat kids have been released into the Blue Mountain wilderness in the ongoing effort to rebuild Oregon’s goat populations in their historic habitats.

The goats were hunted to extinction in the 19th century and remain the rarest game animal hunted in Oregon today, state biologist Corey Heath told The Oregonian in this story.

Oregon’s Rocky Mountain Goat population has grown to about 800 since reintroduction efforts began in 1950.
