Wisconsin Goat Thieves

Thursday, August 13, 2009

Thieves in Wisconsin made off with nearly 120 goats worth an estimated $32,000 in two separate, and unusually large, heists in Dodge and Green Lake counties.

Kiersten Zimmerman, 18, who was caring for her family’s goats, told police she woke up one morning to find more than 100 of the goats out of their Dodge County pen. When the goats were rounded up, 40 were missing.

“We have two chains on each fence, so one chain maybe (the goats) could get open,” Zimmerman said, “but the other (chains) all have clasps, and (goats) don’t have opposable thumbs so they’re not going to open those fences.”

A week later, in Green Lake County, a farmer near Markesan returned home in the evening to find an open gate and many of his milking goats roaming his property. He returned the goats to their pen and went to sleep. The next morning, 80 some goats were missing.
