Firefighting Goats

Saturday, September 19, 2009

As California fights wildfires, more western states are considering goats for fire mitigation to clear forests of tinder-like underbrush.

Grasses, bushes and small trees allow flames to jump higher in the forest canopy and be spread further by wind, said Lani Malmberg, owner of the Colorado-based Ewe4ic, pronounced “u-for-ik.”

“Goats help prevent forest fires … by eating the dry stuff before the fire season strikes,” Malmberg told Health News Digest in this story.
