Making Soap

Thursday, September 10, 2009

Holly, who blogs at Easy Living the hard Way, posts here about making soap with tallow from livestock she butchers in Wyoming:

“If you’re not saving the leaf lard from the kidney area of your hog for pie dough, then it makes excellent soap. The fat from the same area on the beef is just as good.

“Some of you don’t butcher your own meat so you may not be able to sift through the fat like I do for the most choice pieces but do ask your butcher to save the fat and grind it for you. You can freeze it until your ready to make soap.

  1. Huh, I wish I had time to make soap! The goat I butchered on Saturday was really fat and had gorgeous white lard all over her body. I wish there were someone here who would take it off my hands and make soap. It would be a nice trade and less of a waste.

    cheers,

I’ve never had soap made with lard and really want to try it. Kristeva, between butchering and castrating and raising all those critters you have, can’t you please, please, pretty please whip up a batch and send me a bar?

  3. My wife has started to delve into making soap. It will be great to use up all our extra milk (goat and cow) and not have to by the chemical laden stuff at the store.
