Angora goats helping diabetics
A South African mohair processor plans to use 30 tons of fine mohair a year to make socks to aid diabetics worldwide.
The Medi Sock uses mohair’s natural elasticity and high absorption rate to improve circulation and draw moisture away from the foot, said Denys Hobson, chief executive of Cape Mohair.
“These are the fantastic attributes of mohair that people don’t always know about,” Hobson said in this story, noting the company is exporting to the United Kingdom and plans to expand into European and U.S. markets.
Editors’ Note: The story on the Medi Sock also gives interesting background on Angora goats and their history in South Africa, which produces much of the world’s mohair.
