Capri-Croc? Ancient goat is a new find.

Sunday, November 29, 2009

It’s not every day that archaeologists announce the discovery of a creature that can grace the pages of All Things Goat but earlier this month they did. The Balearic Island cave goat, aka mouse goat, is easily recognizable as a goat but adapted to its world in a reptilian way enabling it to thrive during periods less kind to mammals. Found on Majorca, a Mediterranean Island, the goat dubbed Myotragus balearicus is believed to have existed for five million years before becoming extinct some 3000 years ago.  Mongabay.com and MSNBC both offer articles on the find with insights about its longevity, environmental adaptations and theories about its evolution as a dwarf animal in a difficult evolutionary time.
