Jo Ellen Wiese: Shepherdess

Monday, November 30, 2009

CALLAWAY, Neb. — Until a few years ago, Jo Ellen Wiese lived year-round in a tent in the hills above the South Loup River where she managed nearly a thousand meat goats.

Her border collie “Cinch” learned to grab zipper strings with his teeth and open the tent’s door. One day, Cinch went too far.

“We come home, walk into the tent, and the dog is in the swivel recliner and all these goats are huddled on our bed,” Wiese, 46, told The Omaha World Herald in this story.

“Let me tell you what, if you’re a woman living in a tent, keeping everything clean enough to make you happy is a difficult task,’’ she said. “You come home and you find your house full of goats, you’re not going to smile.”
