Listeriosis in Goats

Sunday, November 1, 2009

The shepherdess at Devon Fine Fibres, England, shares her experience — in words and video — with listeriosis, also called “circling disease” and “silage sickness.”

Listeriosis is caused by bacteria that lives in the soil and in poorly made silage. It can result in encephalitis, late abortion, septicemia and liver damage. Listeriosis generally is fatal, but can be cured with antibiotics if caught early.

Editors Note: As the shepherdess says in her post, she’s not a veterinarian. Neither are we. Always consult a veterinarian if you suspect an animal is seriously ill.
