Livestock Guard Dogs

Friday, December 18, 2009

Many people who raise goats or sheep make use of livestock guard dogs (LGD) to monitor and protect their herds when the humans aren’t available. There are several breeds of LGDs such as Great Pyranees and Anatolian Shepherds. Finding a proven LGD can be a chore but is worth the effort if a goat herder lives in a high predator area or wants the peace of mind that comes with knowing the animals are guarded when the herder is away. USA Today recently featured a nice photo of Vern and Gianaclis’ herd of goats with Anatolian LGD in their Photo of the Day section. There are rescue agencies around the country that specialize in this type of dog, as well as excellent breeders than can provide more information and help you choose the right dog for your needs.
