The Yule Goat

Sunday, December 20, 2009

While finishing up the final touches of your holiday decor, don’t forget about the Yule goat. This straw replica of a goat is a traditional Scandinavian holiday decoration ranging in size from a few inches to almost 50 feet tall, Sue Weaver explains in a fascinating article at Inside Storey. While the origin is lost in antiquity, the Yule goat is associated with the goats that pulled Thor’s chariot and provided sustenance to the god and his friends. Apparently Thor slaughtered and ate his repeatedly reincarnating caprine friends with some regularlity. The exhibit of a Yule goat is an interesting tradition and story, and would make a fine addition to the festivities of any goat loving folks during the holiday season.
