Journey to Kathmandu
Film maker Chris Parkhurst of Barang Films traveled to Nepal to make this documentary on the goats of the Himalayas and their sacrificial role in the Hindu Tantric festival Dashain.
Parkhurst and his crew followed the goats, Nepali herders and the families who bought goats for sacrifice, using the goats as guides to show how the ancient tradition of goat herding is being replaced by large goat-producing factory farms, many in India.
“The age old ritual of goat herders shepherding their animals through the mountains is rapidly becoming a lost trade, a vestige of an important tie to Nepali culture,” Parkhurst said.
Parkhurst, who is based in Oregon, said the idea for the film came to him several years ago when he was trekking in the Himalayas and kept running into herds of goats. “I can vividly remember one of the days wildly snapping photographs of them and wondering what their story was,” Parkhurst recalled.
Parkhurst’s documentary beautifully captures the animals, the people and the Himalayan landscape, imparting a mythical quality to a vanishing life most of us have only imagined.
