Pet Dogs With Horns

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Bill Wellcock, an English major at PSU, recently attended the Pennsylvania Farm Show. While he was mystified by the hay judging and found the cows intimidating and the horses less than fascinating, the goats made an impact.

Goats, he wrote in his editorial for The Daily Collegian Online, are “just right for the transition from Chinese takeout-eating suburbanite to self-sufficient mountain man.”

“They’re like little pet dogs with horns,” he posits and in his conversation with Boer tenders Marie and Russ Reitz, discovers that there is a Texan goat named Tarzan worth $250,000 if sold in the US and could bring as much as $2 million in Brazil.

His footnote on goats? “Dogs that you milk and eventually eat.” Well put, Bill.

Today I am experiencing what it truly means to have a pet goat. My little doe born today Jan. 27th was not accepted by her mother and so I must be her surrogate mother. Hope I can do the job right.

That you were right there and realized what was happening is huge, life-saving. Our best hopes and wishes are with you as you work through this. You are her mother now in every sense.
