Mongolia: Winter May Kill Half the Livestock

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Aid workers say an estimated 20 million goats, sheep and cattle may die in Mongolia before spring as the fiercest winter in memory grips the nation.
A Sky News team found dead animals frozen to death everywhere, including outside the traditional home of grandmother Hotont Suon, who wept as she looked at her dead goats.

“Our hay is all gone now,” Suon said. “As our goats die we sell the hides and buy more fodder, but it only lasts a few days.

The ‘Dzud’ – a summer drought followed by a fierce winter — has left millions of animals dying from exhaustion and starvation. Some families are sharing their small tented homes with surviving animals.

Fears are growing about the welfare of thousands of herders who live in remote mountain regions in southwestern Mongolia. There has been no word from people cut off in their villages by the heaviest snow fall in decades, prompting emergency helicopters to launch search and rescue operations.

  1. Thank you for bringing attention to the horrible situation in Mongolia. I just wrote about this on my blog, with a way that people can help,if they click over. I lived there for 4 years and it hurts to see what they’re going through. This winter will severely impact their cashmere industry, for sure.

It certainly is frightening and horrifying. And could happen almost anywhere if weather conditions are severe for long enough. For those who would like to help the people in Mongolia, I’m adding the link found on your site.
