New Test for Foot and Mouth

Friday, February 26, 2010

While you don’t hear much about foot and mouth disease in the U.S., it remains a big problem in many parts of the world. Case in point: an outbreak in South Korea in January resulted in the culling of nearly 6,000 animals.

Foot and mouth is a highly contagious disease that affects cloven-hooved animals such as goats, pigs and sheep and can result in the animals’ death. Fortunately, South Korean scientists have developed a gene based testing liquid for Type A foot and mouth.

Because the new liquid does not use a live virus like other methods, there is less risk of virus spread and special facilities are not needed.
