Nine Dead in Q Fever Outbreak

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

AMSTERDAM — A rare virus released into the air when goats abort has killed at least nine people in the Netherlands and infected hundreds of others who had no contact with farms.

The source of the outbreak is not known, though there is a chance the virus mutated, BioPrepWatch reported.

“It’s always been an occupational disease of farmers, slaughter house personnel and veterinarians,” said Jos van de Sande, an infectious disease expert in the Dutch province of Brabant.

In an attempt to stop the disease, the Dutch government so far this year has killed about 45,000 pregnant goats.
