Goat Gets You In

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

That’s the word from King County, Washington, for vendors looking for a high-profile specialty niche at farmer’s markets, which grew from nine to 39 in the county during the last decade.

The county’s agriculture staff surveyed market managers and farmers and compiled a wealth of data on the challenges markets face and some paths toward improving their long-term stability.

On the vending side, farmers who have a specialized product in high demand can pick their market regardless of how long they’ve been in the business or how big their farm is.

As one farmer noted in a small group discussion, “Goat meat can get you in at any farmers market.”
