Goats Break Through Lake Ice

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

HADLEY, Mass. – Rescue workers were able to save two pet goats that wandered onto thin ice and fell through into Lake Warner. A third goat drowned.

The goats, part of a petting zoo at Sunny Brook Farm, wandered away from their barn and had already broken through the ice when they were spotted by Jennifer Gwozdik, a neighbor who called for help.

Farm hands and firefighters first saved Autumn, a pregnant doe who was barely keeping her head above water. A second goat, Cinnamon, was underwater before being pulled into the boat. Both goats were examined by a veterinarian and were expected to recover.

A third goat, who name was not given, slipped under the ice and drowned.

The goats’ owner, Joe Boisvert, said he doesn’t have a fence along the bank and plans to put the goats in a different part of the farm when the ice thins next year on the lake. In the meantime, he’s posted a temporary fence.

“Goats are very curious,” Boisvert said. “They just got mischievous today.”
