Alaska’s Goats and Cheese Making
Alaskans are joining the ranks of goat herders and cheese makers according to Jeremy Hsieh’s recent AP article. This is good news for small homesteaders but raises some concerns for state government.
Kristin Ryan, director of the Division of Environmental Health, worries that some folks may not produce cheese or milk in the most sanitary of conditions so the state has drafted some rules for local cheesemakers. However, the stringent new guidelines are not going over well with producers.
State officials are reconsidering the regulations so as to not overburden small producers. With their goat herds increasing, it’s worth watching to see what will happen in Alaska.
