Brokeback Mountain Goats

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

MADISON, Wis. — No one is on the fence about “A Rush of Blood to the Head,” Beth Cavener’s provocative goat sculpture at the Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin.

The sculpture depicts two males goats kissing in a state of open arousal, their organs resembling human male genitalia. Cavener said her piece challenges the viewer to think about sexuality, human as well as animal.

Comments sent to the Chazen have ranged from people who called the sculpture distasteful and embarrassing to those who viewed the piece as tame and even transcendent.
