ERDOS, MONGOLIA, China–

In an attempt to increase cashmere production, scientists at the Laboratory for Mammal Reproduction and Biotechnology have cloned 14 Alpas goats expected to produce more fiber than standard cashmere goats. The goats are expected to produce 1000 grams (35 oz) of fiber as opposed to the norm of 600 grams.

The project took place at the Inner Mongolia White Cashmere Goat Breeding Farm in Inner Mongolia. Twelve of the 14 goats cloned in February and March were engineered with IGF1, an insulin-like growth factor gene known to play a role in increased fur production.
