Goat Pox Outbreak

TAIPEI, Taiwan–

A recent goat pox outbreak in Yunlin County has resulted in the slaughter of roughly 800 infected goats. The outbreak was discovered at a wholesale meat market when two goats exhibited symptoms of the disease.

Government inspectors immediately visited the ranches from which the infected animals came and tested all of the livestock. As a result, all of both farms’ animals were culled to prevent spread of the highly infectious virus.

While goat pox is not contagious to humans, it can decimate a goat population. The Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine plans a nationwide inspection of goa and sheep farms and purchase of medicines and vaccines to eradicate the disease.
