Halal in Virginia

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

When you think halal goat the first thing that comes to mind probably isn’t Virginia. Mukit Hossain is changing that.

Hossain, a former civic activist and telecommunications exec, turned in his tie for rubber boots in 2008 when he started a goat farm near Fredericksburg. His product? Halal goat meat, naturally raised, humanely slaughtered and delivered, all by Hossain himself.

The growing Muslim population in the US makes halal produce a viable market for producers. In Virginia alone, the majority of the 300,000 Muslims eat halal.

While you wouldn’t expect a Duke graduate to give up a business career to raise goats, as Hossain says, “This is the most peaceful job I have ever done.”
