Transgenic Goats Born

TEHRAN, Iran –

The first transgenic goats carrying the tPA gene were born in Iran’s Royan Institute this spring. Transgenic animals are those born carrying a gene from a different species through human intervention.

One of the goats died at 7 days due to a digestive problem but the other is thriving. The tPA gene is used to treat heart attack and stroke through protein production that quickly breaks up blood clots.

Two additional transgenic goats carrying the factor 9 gene were born in January. Factor 9 protein deficiency results in hemophilia and other clotting disorders.
