HAUTS DE CHARTREUSE NATURE RESERVE, France –

Fifteen bouquetin, a type of mountain goat also called ibex, were recently released into the wild in an attempt to boost population in the Hauts de Chartreuse Nature Reserve. The five females and one male were tagged and fitted with radio collars before being sent on their way into their new home in the French Alps.

Numbers of indigenous ibex have dropped due to hunting and increased human presence. The relocation program was introduced in 1959 as a means to bolster goat populations and has resulted in census numbers of around 9000 throughout the French Alps.

Bouquetin are an interesting looking breed of goat with curly hair and prodigious, ribbed horns.
