Bucky Behavior
I’m still seeing press about Adrien Brody and his gay goats and I can’t keep quiet a minute longer. Have we become so citified that we’ve forgotten that one of the primary motivators in nature is the desire to procreate? Some animals are more obvious about their amorous proclivities than others but all animals have the drive and goats rank pretty far up the list.
Bucklings, male goats under (roughly) the age of 6 months, will start trying to mount at as early as 2 months of age when they aren’t even fertile yet. They don’t care what they’re mounting, they just do it. Generally it annoys the party being mounted. Some wethers will also mount, as well as some does, although normally mounting does are hermaphrodites and incapable of reproducing. We call it “bucky behavior” and it’s so common that the phrase is, well, commonplace.
Mounting behavior does not mean a goat is gay. There really isn’t such a thing as a homosexual goat. A goat is a goat and given the opportunity, a male goat will attempt to satisfy the drive to breed. Even female cattle mount when one is in heat. There are terms for that as well: bulling for the mounter, standing heat for the mountee.
It’s not aberrant, or abhorrent for that matter if you’ll pardon the alliteration, it’s nature. Get over it already.
