KOLKATA, India –

A 300 year old tradition came to an unruly conclusion last week when the carcasses of goats sacrificed at Baba Panchananda temple caused a riot. Goat sacrifice is common in Hinduism and the carcasses are traditionally distributed to devotees following rituals. However, during the distribution at the temple shots were fired causing confusion during which people were trampled and brickbats thrown. Eight people were injured before police were able to bring the situation under control.
