Volunteers Keep Goats In

LANHAM, Maryland –

It’d be quaint and humorous as long as it wasn’t your neighborhood, but people in a Lanham neighborhood were getting pretty fed up with livestock running at large through their yards and streets. Quoted in the Washington Post, 16 year old Zainab Bangura said after being chased by a llama, “It started following us, and there was a big pig running after it. I didn’t want to play — I wanted to get to school.”

The owner of the pigs, llama, goats, donkey and horse, 70 year old Leo Dorsey, wasn’t being intentionally negligent. He just couldn’t afford the materials needed to repair his fencing.

Mr Dorsey, now retired from a career of relocating Vietnamese and Laotian refugees, purchased the property upon his return from Vietnam, but fences wear out and never a wealthy man, he was buying materials a little at a time in the hope of fixing his fence and keeping his critters in.

On a recent trip to Home Depot, Dorsey explained his dilemma to assistant manager, Laura Kalinowski. The Lanham Home Depot has a policy of doing community projects and Kalinowski added Dorsey’s fence to the list. Last week the mile long fence was built and the animals are now contained. Not that everyone doesn’t enjoy having surprise visits from goats and donkeys but….

Mr Dorsey and his dog, Sparta, hope to turn the farm into an animal preserve.
