Longmont Dairy Contamination

LONGMONT, Colo. –

(We’ve been following this story waiting for definitive information prior to sharing it with our readers.)

The Longmont Billy Goat Dairy offers raw goat’s milk to members of their co-op but a problem arose recently when about 30 people became ill after drinking the milk. Officials believe the milk was contaminated with Campylobacter and E. coli, both fecal borne illnesses generally spread through improper handling of contaminated food products or poor sanitation practices.

The Colorado Department of Public Health shut down the dairy and the owners instituted new sanitation practices to prevent a recurrance of infection. The dairy was reopened to the public two weeks later after an inspection and clean bill of health from the Department.

While raw milk is considered healthier, stringent sanitation is necessary in order to prevent the spread of bacteria that are normally killed by pasteurization.
