Disappearing Goat Mystery

PIEDMONT Region, Italy –

Italian conservationists are baffled by the decline in ibex found in Gran Paradiso, Italy’s oldest national park. The ibex, a wild goat breed, is Europe’s largest alpine wild animal and has been a fixture in the park for generations, but now there is an alarming trend.

A recent census found that 75% of ibex are not living to maturity. Authorities can not find a reason for the failure of the young animals to survive while adult populations are unaffected. While several theories are being considered, scientists have yet to come up with an answer.
