Kidding Season Cometh

Wednesday, February 9, 2011

It’s that time of year again. Time for baby goats to start bopping around, spreading joy and wreaking havoc. With the recent severe weather across most of the US, goat tenders may find this year’s kidding a bit more challenging than usual.

Cold temperatures and high precipitation can lead to problems for newborns so it’s good to be prepared. Now is the time to ensure your kidding supplies are stocked so you’re ready in the event a problem arises. Molasses and calcium supplements for the mothers, colostrum in storage in case you have to bottle feed, penicillin on hand in the event of a problem kidding, all of these are things to consider. Make sure your kidding area is out of freezing drafts and is dry with good, clean bedding. If you immunize, check that you have ample supplies of vaccines, needles and syringes.

Kidding season is exciting but it takes some preparation so don’t be caught unprepared. Best of luck to everyone!
